AFTER the insanity of being back in his own home had worn down and the worrisome busybodies had Dorian settled into his own bed—which had been moved to a bedroom downstairs, one Dorian had never been in before—he began to weigh things: Jansen, the shit he’d done to get in this mess, how it could affect the dancer, the worry and nervousness he’d seen from him, how weak he was now. Dorian hadn’t said much in those hours, only stared absently at the wall while Jansen sat stiff as a board beside him.

“You ever gonna tell me what’s wrong?” Dorian kept his voice low, even, and almost distant.

Rolling onto his side, Jansen stared at him in silence. Even in the dark of his bedroom with casts keeping his limbs from moving, Dorian was still utterly gorgeous. He didn’t look fragile or destroyed, though Jansen knew him well enough to know that was going through his head.

“I….” He didn’t know what to say, honestly. He was with Dorian—who for all intents and purposes, was pretty much everything Jansen had ever wanted in a man. He was smart and attractive and kind enough, and, God, the man was amazing in the sack, but he…. “I don’t know. I guess…. Dorian, what are we doing? What I mean is, are we together? Are you just keeping me around so you’ll have someone to take care of you and keep you company?”

Jansen watched Dorian’s bare chest inflate as he took a deep breath. Muscles flexed against his tanned, tattooed flesh. Dorian rolled his head against his pillow.

“What do you want us to be, Jansen? I asked you to be patient with me. I don’t know how to do any of this relationship shit. I’ve been alone all my life, and frankly, I don’t have a problem being alone for the rest of it.”

Okay, that kind of hurt. Maybe it shouldn’t have, but it did. Maybe Jansen should’ve known better than to expect anything from Mr. Grant. Yeah, sure, he’d been warned, but God, Dorian had kept him around. He’d asked Jansen not to leave, asked him to stay in his home.

“I don’t want to be anything you don’t want me to be,” Jansen said as he rolled away. Dorian called his name, but Jansen couldn’t bring himself to look at him. Dorian called his name again. Jansen turned his head slightly. “You don’t owe me any explanations. Just let it go. Forget I said anything.”

“No, you’re upset, and I didn’t mean that—” Dorian sighed. “—as bad as it obviously sounded.” Fuck! Dorian wanted to reach over and touch Jansen, maybe even hold him. It was the first time he’d ever looked at a man and didn’t immediately want to fuck him, then send him away. “That patience I asked for,” he finally said. “I know it’s going to be hard to understand and accept, but if we’re….” What were they going to be? Where was this thing going? “Give me time, okay? I have a lot of shit goin’ on in my head, and none of it makes any fuckin’ sense to me.
